Infection 1 - Worldwide Hardcore Attack 2x7" 4-way split

Coucou, les chaton.ne.s! We're back with another quick update. So, we'll make a brief pause of our 80s ex-yugoslavian hardcore punk special post with this superb 4-way split. Byllepest Distro (Norway) once again surprise us with this collection featuring 4 bands around the world: GAZM (Canada), Negativ (Norway), Muro (Colombia) and Blank Spell (USA). I knew the existence of this record since june-july 2017 (I have some "privileges" I must admit ha ha) but it wasn't until early this year that an official preview was made available through the record label's official bandcamp account, only featuring one song of each band. And, finally, last friday the page was updated with, apparently, the final tracklist.

Now, each band contributes 3 songs for a total of 12. All of them are brand new and exclusive to this release. I'm not sure if 2 songs are missing yet since the front cover states "14 tracks". I think we'll find out when the physical edition gets released next month. Either way, the work is fantastic. As curious fact, the artwork was designed by Carlos Velásquez (member of Rat Trap collective and also one of Muro's guitarists) and the tracks were mastered, for both vinyl and digital releases, by Alex Nagle, who also mastered Blank Spell's self-titled EP (World Gone Mad, 2015).

Regarding the sound, all the 4 bands play short, fast and loud hardcore punk, the way we do fucking love it. Firstly, we have GAZM. This Montréal-based outfit has been around since 2015, I think, and recently released last year Menace 2 Tha Earth 7" through Byllepest Distro. I detect some old-school hardcore traits in their sound with some cool guitar solos, overwhelming riffs and mid-tempo breakdowns. If you enjoy modern american hardcore bands such as Hank Wood And The Hammerheads and Crazy Spirit (without the noisy elements), this is for you.

Secondly, we have Negativ from Norway. I haven't had the opportunity of featuring this impressive band because I tried to get a physical copy of their Automatic Thoughts EP (Byllepest Distro, 2016) but here in Colombia only a few copies arrived and they went out of stock quickly. Pretty solid sound, womyn and man vocal duets, and a musical execution pretty similar to modern american acts like GAG and Creem, but hey! the spirit of norwegian hardcore classics such as Kafka Prosess and So Much Hate can be traced too.

Next, we have one of our best colombian picks of 2017, Muro. Following the success of their full-length album Ataque Hardcore Punk (Byllepest Distro, 2017), they're back with their unique and top-notch style, mixing the best elements of different american and european hardcore schools with the iconic and passionate execution that only comes from Latin America. Did you miss their European tour last year? Don't worry because they'll make another one starting early next month including their live performance at K-Town Hardcore Fest (in Copenhagen, Denmark). I'll leave you the dates below.

Last but not least, another band featured in our best picks of 2017 - international edition. Blank Spell surprise us once again with their unique and personal hardcore punk style but this time I do think they opted for a more traditional hardcore-oriented approach with less post-punk traits. The music still does have a "dark" feel, however.  If you have enjoyed this new wave of female-fronted hardcore bands such as Krimewatch (USA) and Game (UK), for naming a few, this band will please you.

Lastly, click on the image for getting redirected to the official bandcamp account where you can listen to this outstanding record. We do hope more volumes of these series with more surprises. I think I'll get my physical copy in july and upload it shortly after. Highly recommended. Enjoy and until next time. Kisses and hugs!
